First tank down

We finished off the first tank of gas on the new Prius today. We finished with 48.5 miles per gallon! After fueling up we drove over to our friends house in the city and I managed to get 55.3 MPG average for there and back home. Maybe if we get it off to a good start, Bridget will be able to keep it higher during her commutes. She was giving me all the pointers on how she drives the car. Apparently she now knows every hill and every spot where you can coast and get 100+ MPG....if you don't get it right she will mock you! Just a warning!

The best news of all, Bridget reports that she really loves her car. She said she really liked the old one, but this one she LOVES! She says it is much more entertaining to drive as she tries to maximize her MPG. She is happy if she keeps her average the same on the way to work (apparently more uphill) and then increases the average on the way home. She has already said she wants to get better than 50 on this tank. One other great point about the Prius is that it recommends the cheap gas. Both of our VW's (well her old one) requires premium gas and when you put the cheep stuff in there is a noticeable difference in both power and smoothness. So the cheap stuff is a nice change of pace. I tried to talk Bridget into a Honda Metropolitan with a side car for the kids...she shot me down even though they get 100 miles per gallon. And they don't make a side car either, there were some holes in my plan!

That's pretty cool. The mileage will improve as the engine gets broken in. When there are multiple indicators that tell you how you are driving, you become a hyper-miler.

and half of that tank was before we learned some of the "tricks" to driving a Prius for the max mileage. And I've read about the break in period until about 10,000 to 15,000 miles. Seems like a lot of miles, but I've read it at a few different sites.

That's really good. I liked the little scooter. One of the techs at work made his own motorized bike.
Gets approx 150 miles per gal.

My friend Dave has an electric assisted bike that he plugs in at work. His mileage is infinite because you can't divide by zero.

I keep thinking of making a sign to put on the bike trailer that reads 1,000,000 miles per gallon....but that's not entirely true since I would need lots of gallons of H2O!

chris i am so envious of the new car. we want a prius. i keep hoping the contour will die. it only gets 22 mpg. Course we never drive much the 10yr+ car still only has 68k miles. The other car we have been eying is this one (for when your wagon dies) http://www.popularmechanics.com/blogs/automotive_news/4235586.html
